Xbox 360 to Netflix

By: Pranay Rupani

Netflix subscribers, if you've got an Xbox 360 and a Windows Vista PC, you don't have to shell out $99 for Roku's Netflix Player box to get your Watch Instantly library on your TV screen—you already have everything you need. Using the free Windows Media Center plug-in, vmcNetflix, you can turn your Xbox 360 into a Netflix Watch Instantly box.

With vmcNetflix, you can watch, browse, and queue movies to your Netflix Watch Instantly queue all from your Xbox 360 or Vista Media Center. A highlight...of the list of growing features listed on the vmcNetflix site include:

* Stream WatchNow movies directly to the Media Center player.
* Download WatchNow movies to a "Watch Later" gallery.
* Support for Vista Extenders on both x86 and x64 platforms.
* Support for Netflix Instant Queue.
* Support for Episode listings.
* Search for movies by keyword.
* Browse DVD and WatchNow movies by genres.
* Sort Gallery by Title, Year, or Star Rating.
* View your queue, history, and recommendations.
* Add, remove, move movies in your queue.
* Supports DVD/Movie Parental Controls

What You'll Need

Now that you've got an idea of the end product, let's take a look at the short list of things you'll need to turn your Xbox 360 into a Netflix player.

1. An Xbox 360
2. Windows Vista with Vista Media Center (it's included by default in Vista Home Premium and Ultimate)
3. A Netflix subscription
4. The freeware vmcNetflix plug-in

Step 1: Set Up Your Xbox as a Media Center Extender

If you've already set up your Xbox 360 as a Media Center extender, you can skip this step. Unless you're already using your Windows PC as a Media Center powerhouse and have a tuner card installed on your Windows machine, chances are you haven't had much reason to set up your Xbox as an extender. With vmcNetflix, you've got a great reason.

Microsoft already provides detailed instructions for setting up your 360 as a Media Center extender, so here's the nutshell version. Start up your Xbox 360, head to the Media blade, and select Media Center. Since you haven't already set up an extender, your Xbox will walk you through the setup process between your Xbox and your PC. The Xbox will generate an eight-digit code to authenticate the connection between the two. Then you need to fire up Media Center on your PC, go to Tasks -> Add Extender, and fill in the blanks in the setup wizard with your eight-digit code when prompted.

Step 2: Install the vmcNetflix Plug-in

Now that your Xbox is set up as a bona fide Vista Media Center extender, you're ready to download and install the vmcNetflix plug-in. There's nothing to it, so just download the latest plug-in from the link and go through the installer.

Step 3: Set Up Watch Instantly on Your PC

Before you can stream Watch Instantly videos to your 360 extender, you need to make sure your PC is Watch Instantly-ready first. If you've already watched videos on this computer using Netflix's Watch Instantly feature, you can skip this step. If not, forge ahead.

Your PC needs to install a plug-in or two from Netflix to help deal with the DRM and such used to stream videos. Installing them is as simple as logging into your Netflix account using Internet Explorer, clicking the Watch Instantly tab, and then playing anything. You don't have to finish it, so just click Play on the first video you stumble across.

Netflix will prompt you to install their plug-in before the video starts, so just accept their prompts and install. When you're finished with the simple installation, you should be watching the video you just chose. Once you're there, you can stop the playback. Soon you'll be watching that through your Xbox, on your TV, from the comfort of your living room.

Step 4: Set Up vmcNetflix on Your Xbox 360

vmcnetflix-installed.pngNow you need to run your Xbox 360 in Media Center extender mode. To do so, turn it on, head to your Xbox dashboard, and fire up Media Center from the list where you set it up originally. Your Xbox will find your computer and start up in Media Center mode.

Once there, scroll down to the Online Media section and then move left to select the program library. You should see an entry for vmcNetflix. Fire it up.

watch-now-login.pngSince this is the first time you've run vmcNetflix on your extender, you'll need to set it up with your Netflix account. Doing so is as simple as providing the plug-in with your Netflix username and password. Do that, and you're ready to start watching movies.

Step 5: Enjoy!

That's all there is to it. You can now stream any Netflix Watch Instantly video directly to the TV in your living room using the Xbox 360 that's already there. No $99 out of your pocket, no extra piece of equipment to add to your entertainment center. vmcNetflix handles everything nearly perfectly, from separate episode listings for television shows to managing and accessing your Netflix Watch Instantly queue.

The vmcNetflix plug-in has been in steady development for a few months now, but as the video above points out, the vmcNetflix plug-in can be a little slow and sometimes buggy. I hardly notice the sluggishness, though thinking about it, it does feel a little slower than normal Media Center extender operation. If you run into bugs, the vmcNetflix homepage offers tips for troubleshooting. I've found that restarting my 360 and or Media Center PC remedies any problems. Be sure to check back in with the vmcNetflix homepage from time to time and keep an eye on updates, since the developer is fixing problems and adding features at an impressive pace.

Also Netflix can download Watch Instantly videos and save them on your computer. This comes in very handy because saving videos means you don't have to worry about downloads buffering, and video playback, fast-forwarding, and rewinding all work better. The downside is that saving videos is not part of the Watch Instantly terms of service.

Upcoming PC Games of 2009 & End of 2008

By: Billy Szkoda

What to look forward to in 2009/ end of 08

There are a lot of games that will be coming out in 2009/end of 08 for PC gamers to look forward to. As this year's E3 companies such as Activision-Blizzard revealed their latest offerings for the PC gamer and while it may not be the bonanza it was in years passed there is still much to gossip about.

Here are some of the top games being released in 2009/ end of 08:

•Rise of the Argonauts - Focusing on Greek myths, this offering from Liquid Entertainment promises to bring in characters and creatures from the most popular Greek myths and presents them in a format that allows for fast-paced combat and rich storytelling.

•Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - This time around, the conflict escalates as the Empire...of the Rising Sun enters the fray. With an entirely new faction, the game promises to be even more exciting and satisfying than any Red Alert title to date.

•Crysis Warhead - Don the nanosuit of Sergeant Sykes, aka "Psycho," and experience a storyline parallel to the events of the original game.

•Left 4 Dead - Using the Counter-Strike Source Engine, Left 4 Dead has a group of four unlikely heroes band together to battle hordes of infected.

•S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Clear Sky - Clear Sky is the prequel to S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl and takes place a year earlier, when the unstable Zone is causing anomalous activity galore.

•Alpha Protocol - Sega and Obsidian are reteaming for this role-playing game that eschews sci-fi and fantasy for a Bourne Identity-like world of high-tech espionage.

•Spore - Spore is a simulation game created by Will Wright that allows players to control various life forms from the cellular to the galactic level.

•Far Cry 2 - The sequel to the much-acclaimed island shooter aims to make a big splash in 2008.

•Empire: Total War 3 - The Total War series takes to the seas with 3D naval combat in this 18th century strategy game.

•Fallout 3 - After being cancelled at Interplay, this sequel to the cult post apocalyptic role-playing game was resurrected by Bethesda, where it is currently in development.

For me left for dead appears to be very promising as it has my all favourite mode of all time - COOP! The thought of battling it out with hundreds of monsters with friends is a very promising prospect. Coupled with the fact that it is being produced with the source engine makes this the highlight of E3 for me.

Crysis warhead will also have high expectations considering how much of a success its predecessor was. It will be interesting to see how Far Cry 2 compares to this title in terms of graphics and game play considering Crysis was supposed to be a sequel to far cry in the first place.

I will also be looking forward to Empire: Total War 3 as I always find this genre of PC game very enjoyable as well as the extra challenge that will come with 3D naval combat.

An Introduction to the Nintendo Wii Fit

By: John Milligan

The Wii Fit is a video game developed by Nintendo for the Wii console and was released in Japan on December 1, 2007, and then later in other regions in April and May 2008. Here we take a brief look at this new product which has, and still is taking the world by storm.

Health and fitness: getting a Wii bit fitter. Sorry about the pun but this really is the case. Wii Fit is the popular fitness phenomenon for the Nintendo Wii and you are sure to want to buy one if you haven't got one already that is.

It is believed that fitness video games that have the user perform lower-body balance and weight-shifting activities could help patients with weight-bearing rehabilitation after an injury or surgery. In addition, games that focus on upper body movement...patterns could be helpful in a rehabilitation centre as well.

The game tracks a user's "Wii Fitness Age" through a body test basing the result on the user's current age, weight, and balance. Furthermore, Wii Fit allows its players to compare their fitness by using it's own channel on the Wii Menu. The focus of these activities is towards providing a "core" workout, a popular exercise method that emphasizes slower, controlled motions, but it's the fun approach to fitness of Wii Fit that will keep players hooked on fitness for years to come.

You will be guided through the stages with the help of your own virtual personal trainer, while the balance games will offer you variety and fun to help keep you engaged and excited about your fitness goals. This console certainly turns your living room into a fitness centre for the whole family.

The Wii Fit has opened a large door that allows many more medically challenged people a way to exercise safely and of course is also designed to be enjoyed by the whole family.

Wii Points - What is It?

By: Andre Garcia

Wii points is a payment system that allows you to purchase video games via the Wii shop channel. Essentially, you can either buy Wii points online using your credit card, or you can go to a store such as Blockbuster and purchase them there. Once this is done, you can then purchase games via the Wii shop channel.

Nintendo is giving you a pretty cool alternative to using real money to purchase software titles. It's a pretty straightforward process. At the back of your Wii points card, you simply scratch off the area that's silver, and you'll see a bunch of numbers. You simply...punch these numbers into your Wii account, and then you'll be on your way to purchasing more titles.

The card itself is more flimsy than a typical credit card, but still, it gets the job done. As soon as you load the points to your Wii account, the card is essentially useless anyway. A word of caution would be to make sure you're not paying more than $20 for the card, not including tax, because some stores, you'd be surprised, may possibly charge more than that.

Yes, it's true, if it's your goal to purchase a video game as a gift for someone, it can be quite difficult. You know, sometimes you see these Wal-Mart gift cards and whatnot, and if you think about it, what a great way to get someone a videogame related gift card via the Wii points card. In this way, whoever receives the gift can then choose the game they want. No more taking gifts back or worrying whether or not you chose them the right game.

Another great thing about the card is the convenience. Typcially, in order to purchase any game accessory, you would have to go to the store, make sure it's in, and then make the purchase of course. Using the points card, you literally have your store at your fingertips. Turn on your Wii, go to the Wii shop channel, and there you have it.

You also don't have to worry about the game being sold out, since your not purchasing something that's physical. So there you have it. If you have yet to purchase games through the Wii shop channel, get yourself a Wii Points card and put it to use. It's a different way of buying games, but you just may like it. Good luck!

It is important to note some of the following tips: Darth Vader will be a guest character on PS3 and Jedi Master Yoda on Xbox 360. The Apprentice is a key character in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and is a playable character on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Soul Calibur IV. In the Tower of Lost Souls, the player will fight in special battles to gain rewards. Choosing your character's clothing will not just affect their abilities in battle but also their appearance. Active Matching Battle (AMB) is a unique factor as it allows a character to fight multiple battles simultaneously under different circumstances.

Under the new Critical Finish system there will be a Soul Gauge underneath the Health Meter. It fills up when you are on the attack and decreases when you are on guard. When that meter empties your enemy can strike you and break off part of your armor, altering your appearance and weakening you for the rest of the match. If you empty out your opponent's Soul Gauge again, you have an opportunity to perform a Critical Finish move and kill the opponent instantly by pressing all four face buttons at the same time. I don't know about you but I cannot wait until July 29th!

The State of the Video Game Industry

By: Andre Garcia

It was more than a decade ago when both Sony and Nintendo dominated the video game industry. It used to be both Sega and Nintendo that dominated the industry, but that was before Sony entered the picture, and quite literally knocked out Sega as a video game hardware manufacturer, leaving them with creating software titles only.

It was because of that incident that led many to believe that the industry was only capable of holding just two major consoles, tops. That changed, however, when Microsoft...entered the scene in 2001 with their Xbox. That just proved that the industry was capable of holding more than two gaming systems. This changed everything.

Once this happened, more video games were being created than ever before. So the options, in terms of software titles, had expanded for the consumers. So, the industry was starting to expand. More and more people started to play video games.

Fast forward to today, and we have three gaming consoles to choose from - the great thing is that each system has something different to offer. We have the Xbox 360, which has solid online gaming, with more and more people joining the online community. We have the PS3, which is a really powerful console, and has some really good exclusives. Then, we have the Nintendo Wii, which offers motion-based controls, and has many software titles that the whole family can enjoy.

Because the gap, in terms of hardware, between each new console release has decreased, this means that the consoles of previous generations will still be legit for many people. This means that there is still a lot of life left for those consoles. This is really good for consumers, because now, you can buy a system of interest for very cheap prices. On top of this, the software titles for those specific systems can also be found for very cheap prices. This doesn't even include the used game sections of your local gaming retailers.

So, what is the state of the video game industry? By the looks of it, it's looking really healthy. Also, if you look at the statistics for the past five years, it shows an industry growth, as more and more people are starting to play video games, and people that used to play and stopped, are now re-entering. It's not far from when video games will be looked at as a legit form of entertainment.

Interested in Used Gameboy and Playstation Systems?

By: JJgames

For all of the interest and hype around the newest video game systems, there are sometimes when you can’t do any better than a classic video game system. The best games have been made, but they can’t be played on some of the new systems. That’s why you need to keep your favorite old system, like a Gamecube.

If you are interested in getting yourself a Gamecube, you should look at the kind of games you can buy at the same time. That’s where you will see really how far your... money will go. The Gamecube itself is a great system, which can be stored away and will stand up to the lots of use. If you get Gamecube games, they can also be used on the new Wii system.

Used Gameboy and Playstation games are also in abundance and will be there when you start looking for them, if you’ve decided the portable Gameboy color system or the Playstation is the way you want to go. The Gameboy system is cheaper, because of its smaller size and smaller games. You can look at the many styles of Gameboys there are and decide which suits you best. Everything associated with the Gameboy is compact, so you can invest in it if you are short on space, but you still want to get as many games as you can.

The Playstation comes in two pre-owned game consoles which both are good for gamers, depending on what you want. The used Playstation 2 plays both types of games and comes as a standing console or a sitting one. The standing Playstation takes up less space and will fit well in an entertainment center. The PS1 is cheaper, but doesn’t have the same amount of power.

If you want neither the Playstation nor the Gameboy, there is always the Xbox, which looks good as well as being able to play many games.

Pre-owned Xbox systems are nicely priced, just like to other gaming systems that have been replaced by newer ones. Many Xbox games are less than five or ten dollars when you find them online, including many popular games that still get a lot of attention, like the Halo series or Star Wars games. If those games interest you, an Xbox may be the best bet.

If you are going online to buy these used games and game consoles, you need to make sure you are getting a good deal, including some sort of guarantee. If you are buying from a good dealer, they won’t have a problem if you want some assurance or your money back. That’s why it pays to check and – in the end – pays to buy

The Life Skills That Computer Games Teach

By: Victor Epand

What is a problem? What is an error? For many people problems and errors are obstacles which are in their way and which prevent them from being able to complete certain task. Those people who play computer gamers however tend to look at problems and errors not so much as obstacles as opportunities. Computer games by their very nature regularly put obstacles and traps in the way of the player and players accept that they will regularly face problems which they...will need to overcome in order to progress through the rest of the game.

It is this alternative way of looking at problems as opportunities rather than as obstacles which has led many people to believe that playing such computer games actually provides valuable opportunities for computer gamers and video gamers to develop their life skills for the real world, and become people better adapted at dealing with the inevitable flood of obstacles and issues in their way. The argument is that someone who plays a computer game is more likely to look at a problem in their own life, or a mistake that they may have made, as an opportunity to develop, learn, and get it right next time, whereas non gamers are, perhaps, on the whole more likely to simply see an obstacle, and ignore it, or just stop whatever project they're on, or enlist extra help.

This is, naturally, a gross exaggeration, and there are many people in the world today who are highly successful, and very well suited to the real world and all its problems and obstacles, but who have never touched a computer game. Of course, real life is the best practice one could possibly get for real life, and no matter how realistic and well programmed a computer game is, it is still a mere echo of the world it represents, and the life skills taught and the lessons learnt within that world will, themselves, be an echo of the skills real life will teach you.

However, the essential point to this is that, rather than simply being a leisure activity which wastes time, or is no good except for its own purpose, there is some merit in playing games, and in some cases they may have more to teach us than we currently realise. There are very much two distinct camps discussing this issue - those who are deeply in to playing video games and computer games, and those either opposed to them, or with little interest in them. Many gamers argue the benefits of games, and many non gamers argue that games are a complete waste of time. As with most arguments, both sides have valid truths in their cases, but at the same time, both sides are exaggerating their own case whilst belittling that of the opposing party.

Once we are able to put aside the essential differences and prejudices, we may find that not only do some interesting studies and understandings develop, but that the future of gaming may be influenced in such a way that valuable lessons for life and specifically introduced or developed further.

PS3 Controller Charging Stations

By: Matt

Official or Third Party Gaming Accessories – Who Wins?

The years at Logitech working on the development of gaming products for console and PC gamers has provided me with a great knowledge of what really works for a gamer.

My new challenge at tgrav.com has seen me looking at the market from a totally different angle, that of a specialist online retailer. The site has always been focused on providing the consumer with choice, but a considered choice. By that I mean we have selected the best products within clearly defined... price brackets. In the trade this is called good, better, best. You can define these clearly by the quality, for example; own brand would be good through to best with Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft & Logitech.

Pelican PS3 Charge Stand

I have been testing and reviewing the Pelican PS3 Charge Stand, the beauty of this accessory is its looks. The wow factor certainly hits you, it looks and feels like a first party (Sony) product and looks stunning next to the console. You can charge 4 controllers at the same time, although you do need an additional USB cable(s). One of the key selling points is the unit is stand alone, you can charge it via the supplied AV Adaptor rather than via the console. Another great feature is the power indicators, they light up green (charged) or red (charging).

This product is definitely in the BEST category and should be licensed by Sony….in my humble opinion!

Get out there and order yours now, at £24.95 it is well worth it and priced perfectly. Pelican are also launching the Xbox 360 equivalent in white in June 2008. You can pre-order now to avoid disappointment at launch.

Grand Theft Auto IV(4) PS3 - Liberty City Has Never Looked So Good

By: Ivan A Cuxeva

A great social experiment gone wrong, that's how Rockstar describes their PS3 game "Grand Theft Auto 4" This game has evolved from the original PC version over the years and it's now ready to be launched a state of the art product where entire cities are simulated, this game is also available for Xbox 360. This game is actually rated 18+ so no youngsters should be allowed to play this game since there is a lot of violence, language and inappropriate situations; besides the ratings and restrictions those who are able to play it will definitively enjoy the great deal of detail the guys at Rockstar North...put on this game.

Liberty City is a fictitious multi-cultural American city where all the action takes place. Then main character Niko (player) comes to America after being invited by his cousin Roman in order to find wealth and improve his life style, in other words he comes to live the American dream, however things turn out quite bad when he gets in debt and its dragged into the criminal underworld. Life can be quite miserable when you owe bad people something and the entire city worships money and status, this is the whole scenario Niko Bellic (the player) will have to face. Also, you might find some similarities among Liberty City and New York City as well as New Jersey.

Grand Theft Auto is known for its great deal of violence and shall we say "action" but this time around the guys at Rockstar are being congratulated for the incredible work done by the graphics team. Liberty City has been created and rendered with amazing precision and detail, so much so that it is said that everything to the last pothole and rooftop vent was carefully designed.

Among the many likable characters you will find in GTA 4 we have to mention:

Phill Bell: An Italian business man who works for the big guys in Liberty City and "takes care" of the small fries who give problems or don't pay their dues on time.

Roman Bellic: This is Niko's cousin who is very ambitious and wants to "earn some money" and make a name for himself in Liberty City. He likes alcohol, women and works in his car shop business which he refers to as "Roman Bellic enterprises"

Vlad Glebov: Amusing Russian mafioso.

Many Escuela: This guy adds some latin spice to the game, he is better known by is accent and the reggaeton music which always accompanies his rampages.

Words simply can't describe what you will have to do in Liberty City, this game is sure to keep you hooked for hours because of it's amazing graphics and yes, all the "things that go down in this place" (slang).
